The flavor of the Independence Square was captured in this early 1950s film produced by the Truman Library.

An uncomparable history - no other block like it.
A place where we have gathered, governed and celebrated.

And it can be that way again.

A community effort is underway to continue the restoration and rehabilitation of the historic 1933 courthouse - constructed by then county politician Harry Truman who later governed our country.

Plans are to remove the 1960s urban renewal retaining wall, return to the 1933 courthouse boundaries, create additional parking on the square and set the stage for future restoration and reuse of the interior.

This is our heritage, but it belongs not only to us but a nation.
